Dayton police cruiser involved in crash that shuts down West Third Street

A Dayton police officer was taken to a local hospital Thursday following a two-vehicle crash that shut down a portion of West Third Street.

The officer was driving a cruiser just after 11:40 a.m.. headed west on West Third Street when an eastbound vehicle turned left in front of the cruiser to go north on North Decker Avenue, causing the collision, said James Rider, Dayton Police Department spokesman.

The cruiser sustained front-end damage in the crash and its airbag deployed. The second vehicle landed on its side.

The officer, who was not identified, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. The driver of the other vehicle refused medics and was not taken to a hospital.

The Dayton Police Department posted on social media that West Third Street is shut down from North Trenton Street to North Upland Avenue.

The police department’s Traffic Services Unit is investigating the crash.
